I grew up with fast cars, Corvette Sting Ray’s were a constant in my life through high school. Our first Sting Ray was the iconic Split Window 1963 Coupe. Unfortunately, I only have one picture of that car, but a host of memories. That was my father’s daily drive for about 12 years. It was Silver, White, Green, and back to Silver over the years. After my brother wrecked it he sold it and it was turned into a show car. He then bought a mid seventies Vette. Big mistake! A few weeks later he sold it. Dad found an original paint 327 ’66 that was pure stock with original paint. A couple of weeks later, he found the beast… ’67 427 with hood scoop and side pipes. This was an absolutely amazing car. It had a re-worked suspension and was to this day the most hair raising car I have ever driven. It could pull the tires off the road in 2nd gear. I would love to think what it could do with the modern tire technology of today. Fast forward many years and I found a 1997 6 speed Z51 while vacationing in Florida.
This was a prototype C5 with some special parts that did not make it to production that a lawyer in Florida acquired. The sound was lacking, so I added the Corsa Indy exhaust system and a cold air intake. Sound issues fixed! During that same time, my friend Ben bought Frank Hill’s Porsche 911. Frank is the drummer for ZZ Top. He replaced the original 2.7 liter with a 3.0 liter motor… what a car. We sure had fun running together for many years.
